MONTREAL (AFP) — Puerto Rico's Daniel Santos claimed the World Boxing Association super welterweight title here, knocking out previously unbeaten Joachim Alcine in the sixth round.

Southpaw Santos improved to 32-3 with one draw with his 23rd career knockout, including 11-1 with a draw in his past 13 starts, by stopping Alcine 2:10 into the sixth round with a powerful left hand Friday. (read more)

Olympic Gold Medalist and Cuban defector – Yuriorkis Gamboa – is gearing up for another big fight. This time it’s on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights on July 18th, 2008. Gamboa takes on Jose Rojas (25-6-1). Gamboa (10-0, 8 KOs) just came off a win during his HBO debut in May against Darling Jimenez. The 26-year old known as “El Ciclon de Guantanamo” is heading to Primm, Nevada from Miami and will be opening up his training camp to the media before leaving. Gamboa is now working with well respected and worldwide known trainer – Ismael Salas.
